Fish lifespan varies dramatically by species, and expectations set at purchase time help avoid surprises (both short and long-term) down the road.
Short-Lived Species
Many livebearers like guppies typically live two to three years, while some killifish species (see our killifish care guide) evolved especially short natural lifespans tied to their seasonal habitat.
Medium Lifespan Species
Bettas typically live two to four years, while many tetras and rasboras live three to five years with good care.
Long-Lived Species
Goldfish can live 10-15 years or more in good conditions, while koi (see our koi pond guide) and some plecos and cichlids can live decades. Arowana are also known for exceptional longevity, often outliving their original owner’s expectations.
How Care Affects Lifespan
Consistent water quality, appropriate tank size, and a varied diet all meaningfully extend lifespan compared to fish kept in cramped, poorly maintained conditions.
Planning Ahead
Before buying a long-lived species, consider whether you’re prepared for a decade-plus commitment, since rehoming an adult fish later can be difficult.
