A reliable heater is essential for any tropical fish tank, but choosing the wrong wattage or a low-quality unit is a common and avoidable source of temperature instability.
Sizing Your Heater
A general rule of thumb is roughly 3-5 watts per gallon, though colder rooms or larger temperature swings between room and target temperature may need more. Many hobbyists use two smaller heaters rather than one large one, both for redundancy and more even heat distribution.
Adjustable vs. Preset Heaters
Adjustable heaters let you fine-tune temperature for species-specific needs, such as the warmer water discus prefer (see our discus care guide), while preset heaters offer simplicity for standard tropical community tanks.
Placement
Position your heater near a filter outlet or area of good water flow to help distribute heat evenly throughout the tank rather than creating hot and cold pockets.
Backup Planning
Consider keeping a spare heater on hand, since a failed heater during cold weather can quickly become an emergency, especially for sensitive tropical species.
