Choosing the right rams for your tank

A pair of rams is comfortable in a 20 gallon tank, with larger tanks needed for multiple pairs since they become territorial when spawning. German blue rams and their color varieties want warm, soft, slightly acidic water, typically 78 to 85°F, and very clean conditions. Bolivian rams are hardier, accept a wider range of water and are happy at 74 to 78°F, making them the better choice for a typical community tank.

Provide a sand substrate, flat stones and plants, and dim lighting. Rams are peaceful with tetras, rasboras, corydoras and other calm fish that share their temperature range; avoid boisterous barbs and larger cichlids. Feed small sinking pellets, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp and daphnia, and offer several small meals a day.
