Successfully treating an illness in a hospital tank is only half the job — returning fish to a shared display safely requires a few more careful steps.
Confirm Symptoms Are Fully Resolved
Wait until all visible symptoms have cleared for several days, not just improved, before considering a fish ready to rejoin your main tank.
Remove Medication Residue
Run activated carbon, discussed in our chemical filtration guide, to clear residual medication from the treatment tank before transferring fish or its water.
Re-Acclimate Gradually
Even returning to a familiar tank, use a brief acclimation process to adjust the fish to any water chemistry differences between the treatment and display tanks.
Watch for Relapse
Monitor closely for the first couple of weeks after reintroduction, since some diseases can recur if underlying stressors like poor water quality haven’t been fully addressed.
