Common Reef Tank Pests: Aiptasia, Flatworms, and Red Bugs

Reef aquarium with coral formations

Several common reef tank pests can hitchhike in on new coral, live rock, or even substrate, making early detection and a good quarantine routine essential.

Aiptasia Anemones

These small, fast-spreading pest anemones sting neighboring coral and reproduce rapidly if left unchecked. See our dedicated Aiptasia removal guide for control methods.

Flatworms

Certain flatworm species can rapidly multiply on and around coral, blocking light and releasing toxins if a large population is disturbed all at once during removal.

Red Bugs

Tiny red bugs specifically target Acropora coral, causing tissue recession and stunted growth if left untreated — relevant to keepers following our Acropora care guide.

Prevention Through Quarantine

A dedicated coral quarantine period and dip before introducing new frags, discussed in our coral acclimation guide, catches the vast majority of hitchhiking pests before they reach your display.
