Betta Tail Types Explained: Veiltail, Halfmoon, Crowntail, and More

Part of the appeal of betta fish is the sheer variety of tail shapes selectively bred over generations, each with a distinct look and occasionally distinct care needs.

Veiltail

The most common and originally wild-type-adjacent tail shape, with a long, flowing, drooping caudal fin.

Halfmoon

Named for its dramatic 180-degree tail spread when flared, the halfmoon is one of the most visually striking and popular show varieties.

Crowntail

Distinguished by extended, spiky fin rays that create a crown-like, webbed appearance.

Plakat

A shorter-finned variety closer to the wild betta’s natural fin length, often noted for being slightly hardier and more active than long-finned varieties.

Care Considerations by Tail Type

Longer-finned varieties like halfmoons are more prone to fin damage from decor or nippy tankmates and may swim less efficiently in strong current, so tailor your tank setup accordingly. See our full Betta Fish Care Guide for baseline care.
